  • About

WORK+SHELTER is an ethical cut + sew manufacturer employing and empowering women in need.  We combine fair-trade labor practices with sustainably sourced materials to craft exceptional products.

We are headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, and our production center is located in Delhi, India. Despite the distance, WORK+SHELTER operates as one diverse team.

Sweatshop Free Labor

Our employees are paid fairly and regularly and given the opportunity to earn raises + promotions. Unfortunately, this is not the norm in India, where garment workers typically receive low pay, have little opportunity for advancement, and are primarily female in a country that has one of the highest wage gaps between men and women in the world. WORK+SHELTER is working to change that.

Paid Training

As part of our mission to alleviate poverty and empower women, we offer a paid training program; the only entry prerequisite is demonstrated economic need. Because many of the women who work with us never finished school, WORK+SHELTER’s job training in sewing and production management provides them with the means to find dignified work they otherwise wouldn’t have access to.

Healthy Workplace

Our employees enjoy a clean, safe environment and take delicious chai breaks twice daily. WORK+SHELTER provides regular wellness check ups and dental screenings for all of our employees. We encourage our employees and trainees to pursue health, prosperity, and their dreams.

Empowered Women

We’re creating a new workforce of empowered women by building on our leadership team’s diverse backgrounds in technology, manufacturing, design, finance, and operations. These women are independent, constantly learning, digitally adept, and financially savvy.

U.S. + Global Team

Our global team covers multiple time zones, so we’re almost always available. We’re a big enough team to offer the efficiencies of large-scale production, but still small enough to be in touch with each other, across international time zones, every single day. Our strict quality-control process ensures that our end products meet our customers’ high standards.

Eco-Friendly Equality

We are full-service, sourcing fabric, trims, and packaging for each order. We have both conventional + alternative resources, including low-impact fiber producers, natural-dye vendors, and other social enterprises. We work directly with screenprinters, digital printers and other service providers, overseeing them ourselves so our clients don’t have to.

Choose Change

We try to minimize our impact on the earth by reusing fabric scraps to reduce waste, consolidating shipments when possible to minimize our carbon footprint, and sourcing organic materials from providers who are equally eco-conscious in running their businesses. Over 95% of the fabrics we source at WORK+SHELTER have an environmental qualifier— meaning that they are either recycled, upcycled, or organic.

We apply lean manufacturing principles to our workplace, and think critically about everything from materials to energy to workflow.
